#6 - How to build a successful Shopify App 🚀

What's going on?

Growth

June is a crazy month in terms of installs. We're seeing a lot of growth and reached $28,000 MRR for WideBundle and WideReview combined.

And here is the explanation from my point of view:

1) Crypto is down, so e-commerce is up

This is real. Many people went from e-commerce to crypto and NFT these last few months. And because the market is down, some people are coming back. They will probably quit again in the future.

2) Q2 is always crazy

This is common sense. Usually, people will give everything they have for Q4 (Black Friday, Christmas, New year, etc.), so Q1 is slower. And around Q2, they usually start again.

3) We doubled down on app partnerships

These last weeks, we worked with many other Shopify Apps to do co-marketing and integrations. And it works! It means more traffic from qualified leads.

4) We worked with influencers

It was already working for us. We worked with new Tiktok influencers and got more influencers from Youtube or Instagram. We even recorded videos for influencer courses about e-commerce.

5) We improved the app store conversion

Working on your app listing is essential. But tracking data is even more. We were able to go from 34% to 39% conversion rate thanks to that.

6) We used Twitter

We created an account for WideBundle. We only have 150 followers, and we didn't expect to get customers from it. But by doing that, we went from 2-3 customers a week to 15-16 from Twitter.

Then, just put all of these reasons simultaneously, and you got a crazy marketing machine snowballing.

What I'm working on

It was time to rebuild the complete dashboard of WideBundle. We listened to our customers and read our data to understand what was wrong with our dashboard. And we're slowly working on it.

It doesn't necessarily mean adding features or changing the design. Sometimes, just updating a text is enough.

We're currently at 65-70% of the update. I'll let you know when I push it and how it will impact our activation rate, conversion rate, and retention.

While I'm working on it, the developers are working on WideReview. They are building our admin dashboard to monitor everything and fix user issues faster.

Almost 400 people reading this newsletter now. It's growing! Thank you, everyone!

Wins of the week

1) We reached $28,000 MRR

That's a crazy number. But I know it won't stay. A Shopify App goes through many different stages during the year. We're in a growth stage. But this summer, we'll probably lose customers.

2) Almost 70% done for the new dashboard

This is an important point of 2022. We wanted to rebuild the dashboard to make it easier to understand for everyone. The goal was to improve every retention metric before adding more features.

3) Moving to my new apartment

I will have a better setup, and I'll definitely record videos and create more content around Shopify Apps. Stay tuned!

Tutorial of the week

Add more keywords to your listing

Use Google Analytics for that.

  • Open it and open Behavior.

  • Click on Overview

  • Click on "view full report" below the pages to get the link people used to open your app listing.

  • Select a 1-month period

  • Show all rows

  • Check the "surface_detail" query in the url. This is what people typed to find your app.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and check the urls here you had only 1 pageview

You will find keywords you don't have in your app listing. Add them.

Thanks for reading this! Let me know if you like the format!
