BSSA #149 - Get back your removed reviews

Hi, I hope you’re doing great!

Just got back from some time in Portugal with my family.

I’m spending 2-3 weeks there in Paris, then moving again. 😬

I’ll be in Porto first because a friend is hosting an e-commerce event. Then I’m going to Biarritz in the south of France.

And finally, I’m going to India to attend Shop Quest hosted by my friends from FoxSell.

It will allow me to see the people I love again. If you’re reading this, perhaps you’re one of them. 😏

As if I didn’t see them enough during the year. 🙄

Today:

  • App Store Pulse has 2 crazy new features

  • Judge Me is going after emails

  • The path I followed to grow App Store Pulse to $3K MRR that you can copy

  • Conversation with Blair (ex-Mantle)

Happy about that one!

App Store Pulse has 2 crazy features

Which one should I start with?

Hmmm…

All right: reviews.

You already know this; It’s not something new, but Shopify removed reviews, right?

Yet their algorithm isn’t perfect, as they mentioned. But they also said you could appeal reviews that you think are legitimate. Like reviews that shouldn’t be removed.

If you thought “Damn, that review was legit, why did they remove it?” then I may have something for you.

We analyzed all the reviews removed on App Store Pulse to find patterns. These patterns can let us know why a review has been removed. And we see quite interesting patterns.

One example: If a review was posted by a non-US shop 6 months ago that uninstalled and had an unpaid invoice, then in more than 80-85% of cases it’s removed.

And by following our patterns, we can also tell you: “This removed review shouldn’t have been removed; you should appeal.”

We also show you this data with a message you can easily copy/paste that includes all the reasons they should put it back.

You just have to send that to the Shopify Partners team. How cool is that? ✨

If you thought “I don’t have time to dig into my reviews” then you don’t have any more excuses now!

Try the feature on → App Store Pulse

Well now the second feature is another problem we face as app founders when we look at our analytics.

Have you noticed this HUGE traffic from Singapore? And perhaps you wondered why they weren’t installing your app?

Guess what, we’re all in the same boat. These are bots. And we hate them because we can’t properly analyze our analytics and make decisions. 😡

So we added a tiny (yet so important) checkbox to filter out bots. In no time, you'll have beautiful, clean data. Your installation rate will also increase as a result.

Judge Me is going after emails

Wow. 🤯

That is massive. Bold move.

Look. The most-installed app on the Shopify App Store is going after another big market: email.

They’re going directly against Klaviyo.

Not only do I believe they will have an amazing product just like their app Judge Me, but they will also be way cheaper than Klaviyo.

Can they do it because AI can help you build bigger things now? Or is it something they planned for a VERY long time?

I think they looked at their email system because they already had one. They send emails on behalf of their merchants to request reviews. So I can’t imagine how many emails they already send daily.

They are aware of the challenge.

Do you think it will disrupt the market? Do you think others will follow? Do you think it will impact big names?

I’m really interested to see how it’s going! 🙌

The path I followed to grow App Store Pulse to $3K MRR that you can copy

All right, App Store Pulse is a SaaS Business like any other Shopify Apps. So I think you might be interested in how I started it and grew it to $3K/month.

Because the process isn’t really different.

This time, it was a bit easier for me: I was the target user.

You know, I always told you when I shared how to grow a Shopify App that you needed to be in your customers' minds.

You needed to know them better than they did.

And it was done in 2 ways:

  1. You spend so much time with them

  2. You’re one of them

And many great Shopify App Founders started because they were once merchants. And I think that’s the most powerful unfair advantage.

Because you spent quite some time building in the market, you have the network, you know the problems, and more importantly, you know what’s wrong with the current solutions provided.

So look, I’m a Shopify App Founder myself and I know what I want.

I just started building a product I’d use myself.

Then I started talking to Shopify App Founders. It’s easy because I’m one, so I already hang out with them.

It would’ve been the same with Shopify Apps if I were a merchant.

All right, I talk with Shopify App Founders and notice that they have the same problems we share:

  • Finding the best keywords to use

  • Understanding why your keywords positions are moving

  • Finding out what changes your competitors made that resulted in a better ranking for them

Well, that’s why I built that in the first place.

Today we have a whole system with a lot of data that can let me know when something happens, like a keyword changing position, and what caused that.

And you get that data too if you use App Store Pulse. But now we have more than that.

We’re diverging; let’s go back to the topic. 😅

I’m taking my own problems. That’s the cheat code. That’s why spending time with a merchant or becoming one yourself, even for a small store, is powerful.

Then you find people with the same problems. And that’s important because you might jump straight to building.

You can do it if you’re building it for yourself. But if you want users, you need to learn about how they live with this problem. How they talk about it. How they “solved” it.

Because they may have the same problem, but it can still be slightly different.

And then you build WITH them. Not for them.

I had the chance to have great people as I was building. Sharing their own vision of the product, what they wanted to have, their dream platform.

And guess what: I followed the exact same process in 2020 with WideBundle. Nothing more.

I am just following what I’ve been sharing since 2021! And it works!

Even funnier, I launched WideBundle officially in May 2020. By September, I was making $3K per month.

Well, I officially launched App Store Pulse in May 2026, and we are now at exactly $3108… in September.

And I hope it keeps copying WideBundle because I’d be fucking rich. 🤣

After building the first working version I started to onboard people using my community and my network.

I called a few of the early paid users to understand:

  • Why they decided to use App Store Pulse

  • What feature they liked the most

  • How they were solving the problem before

  • How they think I can improve the platform

  • But also: If they knew someone that might be interested in the platform

Jump on calls with users. I can’t repeat it enough.

I agree it can be stressful. I agree you might not know what to say. But you HAVE TO.

You’ll learn by doing. And your business will thank you in the long term.

And then just build and iterate! And I kept talking about the product again and again!

Some people might be like: All right, I see the product.

Then after reading many posts, they might say: “I’ll give it a try.

That’s what I say when I tell you to post on LinkedIn about your product, your company, etc.

That’s how you start a snowball effect.

I’ll see you at the $10K MRR to give you the whole process, right? 😄

Conversation with Blair

At the end of August, I invited Blair to the Shopify App Founders community, who worked at Mantle (handling growth) and joined Shopify (again).

And I interviewed him in the community and asked a lot of questions, including the most requested one: “Why did Mantle shut down???”

We talked about business, the current situation of the App Store, and more.

It was really interesting, I recorded it all, you can find it on Youtube by clicking here

Oh and I also released the state of the Shopify App Store for August 2026, you might be interested as well so click here.
