Finding the PMF
The PMF (Product Market Fit) is important and you HAVE to find it.
It’s the moment you have the perfect product for your perfect audience. You know you have it because people tell you how great your app is and growth becomes easier.
Look, when you launch a Shopify App (or any SaaS business) there are 3 initial phases:
Finding a problem
Finding the initial users
Finding the PMF
The first one is simple but people make it complicated:
Talk to potential merchants
Find something they don’t like about their current apps or something missing
Build it with them
The 2nd one is linked to the first one. It’s easier if you’ve done it correctly.
I gave you many ways to get your first customers.
But then comes the moment that can make your app or break it: PMF
You have a working app and customers, you make around $500 to $5K MRR.
It means there is need, but you’re not really growing.
That’s because you haven’t find yet the ONE thing your app needs to do great and the ONE type of customers that would benefit the most from your app.
Once it’s done, growth is unlocked.
And here is how you find it:
Create a bucket of your power users. Those are the people paying the most and the people who’ve been paying you for a very long time.
Because THEY are technically your best users, the ones you should build for.
And usually the product is good for them but not great.
So the idea is to get them on a call. As many calls as possible because the more calls you have, the easier it will be to find:
Who your target user is
What they like most on your app
How they would describe your app to someone else
What they truly want when using your app
You may have an upsell app and many different types of customers. And perhaps you might find that your power users are stores:
Doing at least $100K per month
Focusing on post-purchase upsell
Wanting to get more money from people who already purchased
Now your goal is to improve the post-purchase upsell features + help them reach their goal by adding new stuff.
The words they will use to describe your app and their goals become your app listing and website copy.
And it has to evolve. As you build and as people come in, it will change. You have to ensure you keep talking to your customers.
You’ll know when you’ll reach PMF, trust me, I’ve been there.
Quick question, what’s ONE thing you’d like me to talk about in this newsletter? Something you struggle with on your app, whether you have a big app or a small one.
Have a great week and see you in the next email! Love you. 🤗
Mat.
