BSSA #62 - Improving the activation rate šŸš€

Hey! I was thinkingā€¦ šŸ’”

I can take everything Iā€™ve learned since I started building Shopify Apps (I started in 2017!)

And create a video course with many different modules: App Store Optimization, Data tracking, Customer Support, Hiring, etcā€¦

It doesnā€™t exist in the market today! And I have a lot of things to say!

And it would be affordable.

Do you think I should do it?? šŸ¤”

And if yes, how much would you pay for a video course containing everything about growing a Shopify App?

And let me know everything you want to learn! All the topics!

The new social network

Meta launched a new social platform called ā€œThreadsā€.

Itā€™s not available yet in Europe but Iā€™ve been able to create an account (even if it doesnā€™t work properly) but if youā€™re on it, feel free to follow me: http://threads.net/@mat.ds

Little story

I was in Canada in May/June and Iā€™ve met many people.

But I wanted to meet one person: Tobi!

If you donā€™t know Tobi, heā€™s the CEO of Shopify. And I knew he was in Canada.

And I want to share that little story to give you a small lesson.

I wanted to meet him so I tweeted about it by asking him directly.

He didnā€™t reply to that tweet. And thatā€™s when the majority of the people will give up. Most people will take this as a ā€œnoā€ and will stop.

But what I always tell you is to keep going. You can ask people what you want and never assume they will decline if they donā€™t do it.

So I tweeted again another day to ask him. He didnā€™t reply.

And I had to do it again until he finally replied. And unfortunately, he told me he was outside the country.

He didnā€™t say no, he said he was outside the country. So I didnā€™t have to ask anymore, cause I knew it wasnā€™t possible, but it means I could try again another time.

Now, was it really a ā€œfailureā€? I didnā€™t end up meeting him. But I got my response. I kept asking and didnā€™t give up.

And some people asked me Why you kept asking if he didnā€™t reply?

And the reason is simple: He didnā€™t tell me no, yet.

I would have probably asked 10 times if I had to! It all depends on how badly you want it!

How to increase the activation rate?

On Twitter I shared a tweet regarding the Activation Rate. I said it doesnā€™t make sense to focus on the Acquisition when your Activation is really low.

So I will share with you some tips to increase the Activation Rate.

The Activation Rate is the % of people that will actually use your app after installation.

People will get ā€œactivatedā€ after doing everything it needs to make your app run.

For example, they might need to: activate the theme app extension, add something to a product, end change the settings.

And they canā€™t become paying users if they never activate.

And here are some tips:

1) List your onboarding steps and using a tool like Mixpanel, try to understand where there is a huge drop-off, that's the step you should improve

2) Add an onboarding in your dashboard

3) Talk to your new installs to understand what part they don't understand to improve it

4) Look at the actions paying users did that the one who left didn't do. So you can "force" everyone to do these actions because it means they create some "aha moments"

5) Tools like Hotjar to understand what people do and if the dashboard is easy to understand

6) Try to understand who are the people installing your app, perhaps they're looking for something specific they didn't find

I hope it helped! Let me know if you have any questions regarding the activation rate.

Thatā€™s it for todayā€™s email!

I hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to share my newsletter with someone else: https://news.matdesousa.com/

See you next week,
